Where is the Topocoro reservoir?
The reservoir was created by the Sogamoso hydroelectric plant on the Sogamoso River and covers about 7,000 hectares between Girón, Betulia, Zapatoca, Los Santos, Lebrija and San Vicente de Chucurí. The best-known tourist area is El Tablazo, in Betulia, next to the bridge of the same name: a 555 m bridge over the water, with restaurants and access to the docks.
How to get there from Bucaramanga
- Leave Bucaramanga on the Girón highway and continue on the road to Barrancabermeja (National Route 66), passing through Lebrija.
- At La Lisboa (Lebrija), about 35 km from the bus terminal, take the turnoff toward San Vicente de Chucurí.
- Stay on that road, built with the dam, until El Tablazo (Betulia). That is where the restaurants and the way down to the docks are.

Road status: check before you go
In June 2026 the road between Bucaramanga and San Vicente de Chucurí sank in the Náutica area, near the El Tablazo bridge, and traffic was reduced to less than one lane, with a temporary pass while the Santander government prepares an alternative alignment (Vanguardia, June 3, 2026, in Spanish).
- Ask in the chat or ask your tour operator about the road that day.
- On the same road, San Vicente de Chucurí has warned about dangerous sections at Peña de Oro Grande and Peña de Oro Chiquito (Vanguardia, March 2026, in Spanish).
- Landslides on the road to Barrancabermeja also affect access to the reservoir.
- The Girón–Zapatoca road can get muddy in the rainy season; drive carefully on the curves near the bridge over the Sogamoso River.
Getting there by bus
Buses leave from the Bucaramanga bus terminal (Terminal de Transportes). There are routes to San Vicente de Chucurí and Zapatoca (for example, with Copetran). The full trip to San Vicente takes about 3 to 4 hours, according to published schedules.
Docks and boat departures
Boat tours leave from the El Tablazo area. A typical ride reaches the dam wall in about 40 minutes, with stops along the way. Tours run during the day; El Tiempo reports hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
When the water level drops, the shore moves away from the docks and you may have to walk a stretch: in 2024 it was about 600 m. Wear comfortable shoes.
The exact dock for your tour is in your booking. If in doubt, confirm it with the guide team before you leave.

- Leave early: you make the most of the day on the water and avoid the traffic on the way back.
